FAQ
What is a self-guided tour?
A self-guided tour with Tulu Tours means you will travel independently in Japan without a guide, while enjoying the convenience of a pre-planned itinerary and not having to plan your travel. Our tours include access to the TuluApp, which provides a detailed itinerary that you can follow as is or adjust to your preferences.
The TuluApp also includes information about the sites you’ll visit, step-by-step navigation between areas, and access to TuluMap—a comprehensive guide featuring halal food and dessert spots, prayer locations, recommended shops, souvenir stores, and activities for your destinations.
It’s the perfect balance between independence and thoughtful preparation, wonderful for solo travel, couples, or a small group of friends or family.
For whom are the self-guided tours?
What is the difference between a self-guided tour and remotely guided tour?
Our self-guided tours are ideal for travelers who enjoy independent exploration but prefer not to focus on the detailed planning of their halal journey. These tours feature fixed itineraries, accommodations, and durations. While you are free to adjust your days as you like, Tulu Tours does not provide guidance or customization for self-guided trips.
Our remotely guided tours, on the other hand, are perfect for groups seeking a personalized travel experience tailored to their unique interests and needs. These tours are especially suitable for honeymooners, families with children or elderly members, and travelers with specific preferences. Clients enjoy the support of a dedicated personal guide, available both before and during their trip, along with a fully customized itinerary designed to match their interests and requirements.
How do I book my trip?
Is a guide included?
No, this is a self-guided tour, so there will not be a guide accompanying you during your travels. However, you will have access to the TuluApp, which includes your detailed itinerary and information about the places and activities included in your tour - designed to help you navigate and make the most of your journey.
Will I receive an itinerary?
Yes, you will receive a complete itinerary, along with access to TuluMap, an online map that includes an overview of halal food and dessert spots, prayer locations, recommended shops, souvenir stores, and activities for the areas you’ll visit. Your itinerary will also include detailed instructions on how to navigate from one area to another using public transit, based on the planned schedule.
While we believe the itinerary is designed to optimize your travel experience, you’re free to follow it as is or customize it to include your own preferred destinations.
Do note that for some time-sensitive activities, such as observation deck entrances, workshops, or taking the Shinkansen train, it is your responsibility to arrive on time as this is a self-guided tour. If you miss a scheduled activity, we may be able to rebook it for you depending on availability, but additional costs may apply.
What is TuluApp and TuluMaps?
Can I adjust a self-guided tour?
Yes, you can make adjustments to your tour after selecting your travel date. Depending on the tour, you may have the option to upgrade accommodations, choose your bed type, add specific extras, or arrange private transportation between the airport and your hotel.
If there’s something specific you’d like to customize that’s not listed, feel free to contact us, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your requests.
When will I receive my travel overview?
You will receive your travel summary, including an overview of your accommodations and itinerary, 10 days prior to the tour start date. Access to the TuluApp and TuluMaps will be provided 48 hours before your tour start date.
What's included in a self-guided tour?
Be sure to carefully review the tour page for your selected trip to see what’s included. If you feel any information is missing or have additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact Tulu Tours, we’re happy to assist you!
From when should I book a tour?
You can book tours up to a year in advance, but no later than 30 days before the tour start date. Note that the less time is in between booking and travel, the prices may get more expensive.
If you have a last-minute trip to Japan starting in less than 30 days, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Can I extend my travel?
We can customize your travel plans to match your interests by extending your trip. Feel free to contact us to explore the available options!
What kind of accommodation is booked?
With our self-guided tours, you can choose between 3-star or 4-star equivalent Western-style accommodations, ensuring a comfortable stay throughout your journey.
3-Star Equivalent Accommodation
Hotel rooms in Japan, especially in major cities like Tokyo, tend to be smaller than those in other countries. While standard double occupancy rooms typically start at 11m², we select accommodations that offer at least 15m² for added comfort. You can choose between twin beds (two singles) or a double bed (140–160 cm wide).
All accommodations are conveniently located within a 10-minute walk of a subway or train station, making it easy to explore the city.
4-Star Equivalent Accommodation (Upgrade Option)
For enhanced comfort, upgrading to 4-star accommodation provides more spacious rooms of at least 19m², superior amenities, and higher-quality bedding. Double occupancy rooms offer twin beds or a larger double bed (160 cm wide), with the option to upgrade to a King-size bed (minimum 180 cm wide) for extra luxury.
These accommodations are in prime locations, always within 5–7 minutes walking distance of a subway or train station for added convenience.
Hotel Details & Booking Information
Your hotel details, along with your complete travel overview, will be shared 10 days before your tour start date.
What are add-ons?
Add-ons are optional services that are not included in the base tour price but can be added to enhance your experience. Examples include hotel upgrades, private transportation between the airport and your hotel, or additional activities.
You can request these add-ons when filling out the booking request form. If you decide to add services after your booking is completed, please contact us, and we’ll assess whether your request can still be accommodated.
What's the payment process like?
After submitting the booking request form, you will receive an email within 48 hours with payment instructions. Payments can be completed via bank transfer, iDEAL, or Bancontact.
Do I need travel insurance?
Tulu Tours strongly recommends getting travel insurance before your travel.
Unexpected events such as illness before departure, trip cancellations due to Covid-19, emergencies during your trip, or lost luggage are unpredictable and can disrupt your plans. Having travel insurance allows you to prepare for your trip with peace of mind and ensures you’re protected if something unforeseen happens.
It's also recommended that you also take out cancellation insurance.
What are the visa and health requirements for entry to Japan and South Korea?
Please note that Tulu Tours does not assist with visa applications or provide related support. It is your responsibility to verify whether you require a visa, vaccinations, or any other documentation to enter your destination countries.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, we recommend consulting your government’s official website for visa requirements. Dutch passport holders can refer to the Government of the Netherlands' website for detailed information. While a visa is not required for Dutch passport holders traveling to Japan, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your arrival.
Additionally, we suggest visiting the Government of Japan’s official website for the latest updates on entry requirements, as restrictions may change due to circumstances such as Covid-19 or other events.
What vaccines are required?
Generally speaking, visitors to Japan do not require any special vaccinations.
However, it's advisable that visitors to Japan should have all their routine immunizations up to date. Such immunizations include:
- Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine
- Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine (DTaP) vaccine
- Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine
- Polio vaccine
Some travelers should also consider getting vaccinations or booster shots dependent on their activities in Japan:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Rabies shots
- Japanese Encephalitis
